Some New Music From Artists That Have Been Influential In My Life

Here in North America, Spring is in the air! With that seems to come a boatload of new releases. I like sharing new music but this time it’s a little closer to home. Each one of these artists has influenced me as a worshipper and some, especially as a drummer. If you’ve got a few bucks set aside for some new music, here are some albums you might want to consider.

Influential New Music

Hillsong UNITED. Live In Miami.

Not too many new songs on this live recording but it will definitely inspire you to worship to the familiar sound and songs of Hillsong UNITED. Simon Kobler and the crew incorporate a lot of percussive elements that make this appealing to drummers too thanks to the driving force of Simon Kobler

Israel Houghton. Decade.

I’m not really a fan of “best of” CDs but Israel has been so influential in my life as a worshipper and musician that this album is one you need! Songs span over a decade and include incredible drummers Chris Coleman and Mike (Big Mike) Clemons. Decade is a great choice if you want to grow in your musicianship as Israel has probably one of the most talented bunch of musicians I’ve ever heard under one roof. From a worship perspective, Israel’s songs transcend all boundaries and reach the heart. [if you only buy one from this list, let it be this one.]

Parachute Band. Matins : Vespers.

Parachute Band has been on my playlist for years. Their music, and especially this song, became so important to me after my mom died in a car accident in July of 2005. Their music seriously helped me to press into God’s presence in the face of the hardest and darkest days after my mom’s death. Since then they’ve had somewhat of a band-makeover, but I am still loving everything about them. Have you seen the stellar Sam de Jong on drums? This is a must-have in my collection.

Fred Hammond. God, Love & Romance.

My first Fred Hammond listening experience came when I stepped out in faith as a broke high school student and purchased my first gospel record. It was none other than Pages of Life – Chapters 1 & 2. My drum teacher at the time recommended I dive into some gospel, and I am so glad I listened to his advice. Ever since, I’ve kept my ears open for Fred Hammond and although God, Love & Romance seems a little different than what I’m used to, it is still a solid record that will satisfy the gospel soul.

Desperation Band. Wonderful.

We are in the middle of a series with Desperation Band drummer Jared Henderson and I just had to include their latest release, Wonderful. I’m loving this track and am looking forward to the eventual release of their full length album, Center Of It All in April.

Aaron Gillespie. Echo your Song (Live)

We’ve featured Aaron Gillespie here on the blog before and I am a big fan of what he’s doing with his life and ministry. He’s definitely not your average hipster worship guy, and to be honest, I find it refreshing. I think you’ll enjoy his raw and passionate worship expression!

NINEOFIVE. No Other Name.

Even though some of the NINEOFIVE crew are my friends, I have to say that I’ve been impacted by their ministry and music. They are currently on a cross-Canada tour with Parachute Band and Aaron Gillespie that will end with a NINEOFIVE Event in Ajax on March 18. I can’t wait!!!

So there you have it! That’s my music round up for what’s current and new and on my radar.

What worship music are you buying lately? Any from this list?

Passion White Flag will release on Tuesday and will be amazing. Many of the songs recorded live at Passion 2012 are on YouTube now and many were played at LIFT conference a week ago (which was awesome, by the way). Passion recordings have been hugely influential in my worship music journey. Giglio, Tomlin, Knockels, etc have such a heart for leading the church as well as equipping/encouraging other worship leaders.

Hey Alex, Thanks for sharing. I too am really impressed with what Passion is doing these days both with their music and their ministry.

      Thanks for sharing it here!
