[This post is part of a series based on a 25-minute Conversation With Jared Henderson]
As we already announced, Jared and I had the chance to chat about drums, the desperation band, working with Paul Mabury and his role at New Life Church.
Here is part one of the conversation
[tentblogger-youtube 7TiAsYqELTM]Here are some things that I took away from this first portion of our conversation:
- Find the groove and give the bass player something to lock on to
- Stick to the verse grooves and chorus grooves (core elements of the song)
- For what we’re doing in the church we need to be really focused on serving:
- Serving the Lord
- Serving the Worship Pastor
- Serving the Congregation
- Serving the Song
- Ask yourself, “How is my drumming serving those four things?”
If you have any questions for Jared, leave them in the comments and I’ll do my best to have him respond when he gets the opportunity.
Stay tuned for part 2 of the interview!
HI Jon, I am wondering what cymbal You and Jared use for a ride. I am looking for one that is a good ride and crash without being to heavy.
thanks.
Kevin
Hey Kevin, I actually use an old Ed Shaughnessy 21″ Signature ride. However, I really love and want the Zildjian K Constantinople rides.
Hey Kevin,
I use a 24″ K light ride. It’s a really big cymbal but it’s fairly thin and has a great warm tone. The 22″ K light it also a great option for crash/ride.
Awesome interview!!!
Thanks so much for the great words on serving the song.
thanks for letting us know you enjoyed it 🙂
Hey Jared! Great advice and thoughts, have you guys (desperation bad) ever thought about video blogging some of your practice sessions for some of us that don’t know what those look like necessarily? I know you said that it was really important for you to have that time seeing how the practices went and how the drummer fit in. Just something to think about 🙂 would be really really helpful to a lot of people if you guys did something like that i’m sure.
Hey David,
We’re actually getting ready to post some videos of how we do rehearsals for Sunday mornings at our church! We’re trying to determine the best way to do it so that it is actually helpful to anyone who would watch it. Thanks for asking about it, it’s encouraging to know that people are interested!
Dude that awesome! Yeah, if you guys get that figured out that would be extremely helpful.
